Penguin Computing, a business unit of SGH (SMART Global Holdings, Inc.), was founded as a Linux server company back in 1998. Located in Fremont, California, the company has gradually built out their product set to encompass entire soup to nuts HPC/AI system solutions plus a high performance cloud service (Penguin on Demand).

The company also has a full line of systems management software with their Scyld ClusterWare, Scyld Cloud Manager, and Scyld Cloud Workstation packages. Why the name Scyld? Legend has it that Scyld was the great-grandfather of Hrothgar, king of the Danes during Beowulf’s life. Scyld was reportedly a unifying force and strong leader of the Danes. Penguin Computing has six systems on the current Top500 list, but will be taking a giant leap forward with their seventh:  the recently announced enormous Meta AI system, which should enter the list as a top ten system, but, upon expansion, should top out somewhere in the top five.
